Anti-Aging Skincare Tips

For millennia, humans have sought to prevent the aging of skin. The ancient Egyptian pharaohs used balanos oils which are made from a tree fruit in an attempt to fight wrinkles. Cleopatra would use sour milk as skin moisturizer and exfoliant, which we know now is rich in lactic acid – an alpha hydroxy cream which is still used to this day.

Thanks to technology, today’s anti-aging treatments are a far cry from those used in ancient times. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular methods currently available:

Sunscreen

This tip is being listed first and foremost because it is the most important. Not only can the sun cause premature aging of the skin, but worst of all, it could cost you your life. Ultraviolet rays cause mutation of your cells – which can result in age spots and even skin cancer. Both of these consequences can occur even if you aren’t the type that burns. In the United States, this is the most common form of cancer and over 50,000 people are diagnosed with it each year. So whether you’re outside doing lawn work, at the golf course, or just going about normal daily activities – dermatologists now recommend wearing a sunscreen.  You can even kill two birds with one stone by using one of the numerous anti-wrinkle creams on the market which also include sunscreen.

Topical Creams & Serums

Of course there is no cure for wrinkles, but today we understand a lot more about what causes them. There are certain key ingredients in our skin which decrease with age. These include collagen and elastin – two of the primary “building blocks” of our skin cells. This is why some of the latest anti-wrinkle products use an ingredient known as hyaluronic acid cream, which stimulates the natural production of collagen. There are also other ingredients out there which can help prevent the formation of wrinkles, such as retinol A, copper peptides, and tretinoin cream.

Anti-Aging Lasers

In the past decade alone, there have been a number of exciting advancements in laser technology. Laser skin resurfacing can help diminish age spots, promote the production of collagen, and reduce the appearance of scars. These treatments can be performed at a plastic surgeon’s or dermatologist’s office. But before you dash over to your nearest doctor, there are a couple drawbacks to consider. The first one being the price. Unfortunately skin lasers are not cheap – they can set you back any where from a couple hundred all the way up to several thousand, depending on the type you choose and number of treatments you undergo.

So while we can’t totally prevent the aging of our skin, there are numerous options at our disposal to help slow down the clock and keep our skin looking beautiful.
